Most homeowners assume the SEAI solar grant is a flat €1,800 for everyone. It isn't — it's calculated on a sliding scale based on your system size, and understanding that scale matters before you compare quotes.
The actual calculation
The grant works out to €700 per kWp for the first 2kWp of your system, then €200 per kWp for every additional kWp up to 4kWp. Once your system reaches 4kWp, the grant is capped at €1,800 regardless of how much larger it goes.
- A 2kWp system: €1,400
- A 2.5kWp system: €1,500
- A 3.6kWp system (a common residential size): €1,800
- Anything 4kWp or larger: €1,800 (the cap)
Who qualifies
Your home needs to have been built and occupied before 2021, with a valid MPRN, and you can't have previously claimed solar PV funding at that address. Eligibility isn't limited to owner-occupiers — private landlords, approved housing bodies, and management companies can qualify too.
The rule that catches people out
You must have SEAI's Letter of Offer in hand before any installation work begins. Starting work first — even informally — can mean losing eligibility entirely. Once approved, you have 8 months to complete the works.
Worth knowing
The scheme is scheduled to reduce by up to €300 a year and is due to end in 2029, so the earlier you apply, the more certainty you have over the amount you'll receive.
